Rhodes is the founder of a national organization known as the Oathkeepers. Members of the Oathkeepers volunteered to provide security to speakers at the Stop the Steal rally.
The government accuses Rhodes and others of coordinating to overthrow the government on the basis they coordinated travel, discussed equipping themselves with firearms and tactical gear, and stated personal beliefs to “defend the Constitution against all enemies foreign and domestic” and “not obey unconstitutional orders” in public and private conversations.

Rhodes was indicted on 1/12/22 and arrested on 1/13. During an arraignment on 1/25, he plead not guilty and was ordered detained. A superseding indictment was issued on 6/22. On 6/24, he plead not guilty to charge 7 listed above. His trial began on 9/27. On 11/29, a jury found Rhodes guilty of counts 1, 3, and 7. There is a hearing to resolve sentencing issues for multiple defendants on 5/24/2023 at 9:30 AM in Courtroom 10.
