Thomas Baranyi

Thomas Baranyi stated in a media interview on Capitol Grounds that he was behind Ashli Babbitt when she was shot. He claims to blood pictured on his right hand in the photo above is hers from after she fell back.

“It could have been me, but she went in first,” he told the reporter.

He then lifted his hand and said “People have to do something because this could be you or your kids.”

Case Status

Baranyi was arrested on 1/12/21. Initial appearance in the District of New Jersey on 1/21/21. He was released on personal recognizance on 1/21/21. He pleaded not guilty to counts 1-4 on 2/10/21. On 2/3/22, he entered a guilty plea as to count 1. Sentencing held before Judge James E. Boasberg on 6/17/2022, he was committed to the custody of the Bureau of Prisons for a term of 90 days. Baranyi was further ordered to serve 1 year of supervised release and pay a $25 special assessment and $500 in restitution Counts 2, 3 and 4 dismissed on motion by the government.
